Bermuda: History
Europeans discovered Bermuda in 1609 when the Sea Venture, bound for Jamestown in Virginia, shipwrecked on the reefs off its shores. In the nearly 400 years since, the island has produced a culture all its own. While traditions such as afternoon tea and driving on the left still recall British influence, Bermudans are a diverse mix of people descended from West Indians, West Africans, English settlers, Irish adventurers, exiled North-American Indian prisoners, Portuguese immigrants, and a wide range of ex-pats lured to the island's pastel shores. Gombey dancers, reflecting West Indian culture, still perform in the streets on holidays and the Town Crier of St. George's still offers evening lantern tours through this recently nominated World Heritage Site.
